OUR
I D E A
Here at Glenasmole 5th and 6th class, we believe that our idea is simple and achievable; essentially,
we want to encourage people to use less soft plastic in their every day lives.
This can be done in so many ways; from not wrapping our sandwiches in cling film, to using a Bag for Life when shopping - we just want to be more sustainable and encourage our friends and parents to be, too!

OUR
V I S I O N
It would be fantastic if we could all use less soft plastics!"
WHERE IT ALL BEGAN . . .
We were researching Sweden, the most sustainable country in the World when we decided to compare Ireland's waste management and sustainability.
THE STORY SO FAR . . .
We were disappointed to find out that Ireland sends its waste landfill to Sweden to be incinerated. We were disappointed to find that we spend such a large amount of money on exporting waste, and we were even more upset to find out that we don't have adequate facilities to recycle soft plastic, which means that instead of recycling soft plastic here in Ireland, that just gets thrown into landfill waste and is exported to be incinerated too.
OUR CAMPAIGN PROGRESSION
Raising awareness
We have made posters to depict the issues which we felt were most important for people to realise. We wanted to draw people's attention to the fact that, because there are no facilities in Ireland to recycle soft plastics, we end up sending this plastic to landfill to be incinerated in Sweden. We displayed these posters in school and are also displaying them here on our site to reach more people. We have also conducted surveys on the use and volume of soft plastics in our day-to-day lives, and we believe that this has developed a conciousness within people of the importance of this issue.

We have included our letters to the Minister for you to read about the issues we have chosen to raise in relation to our 1 Good Idea Initiative and promoting a more sustainable future for Ireland.

We have sent letters to Minister Bruton, Minister for the Environment to enquire about funding for sustainability in Ireland, as well as highlighting the importance of recycling facilities in our own country.
